Post Operative Care

Mouth Gaurds - Protect Your Winning Smile Proper care of the mouth following a tooth extraction or other dental or oral surgery can reduce complications and increase the speed of healing. Outlined below are a few tips to make your recovery easier.

Immediately after the operation: Bite down on a the thick gauze pad for 30 minutes or more following your procedure. If bleeding persists bite down on the extra gauze that we will provide you with. Resist the urge to remove the gauze! If at bedtime oozing still persists, sleep with two pillows keeping your head elevated If bleeding persists please call us.

Discomfort: Some pain is very normal after an extraction or other procedure. If medication has been prescribed, take as instructed. Often pain will peak 2-3 days after an extraction, as does the swelling this is normal, but feel free to contact us if you are concerned.

Diet: eat soft, nutritious foods and fluids for the first 12 hours. Stay away from tough or chewy foods to avoid unnecessary discomfort.

Swelling: If suggested, gently apply ice packs to the affected area for 20 minutes on and 10 minutes off. You should only continue this for the first 1 hour only after post-surgery.

Hygiene: You can carefully use a toothbrush in the areas of the mouth not involved by the surgical procedure. To clean the affected area rinse your mouth with warm salt water. (One teaspoon table salt in a full glass of warm water. Your doctor will advise you how to clean the treated area)

Avoid: To aid healing avoid all excessive activity. Don't pick at the surgical area, don't spit, don't consume liquids through a straw and refrain from smoking or drinking hot liquids until healing is well established (3 – 4) days.

When to call us:
  • Heavy or increased bleeding
  • Pain or swelling that increases or continues beyond 2 or 3 days
